Paddle Board Safety First (A Checklist)

Paddle Board Safety checklist

If you are looking for something fun to do, paddleboarding is a great choice. It gets you on the water, keeps you active, and has minimal impact on the environment. It is also a great way to meet people who enjoy the outdoors.

With the PADL app, you can rent a paddle board, paddle, and personal flotation device (PFD) from one of our self-service stations. You can start paddling right away without buying or transporting your own equipment.

The key to enjoying paddleboarding, or any water sport, is to put safety first. Before you head out, make sure you are prepared by following these simple steps.

1. Check the Conditions

Know the conditions before you head out.

The conditions you check depend on where you plan to paddle. Ocean, Intracoastal waterways, lakes, and rivers all have different challenges.

Wind speed is one of the most important factors. Beginners should paddle only when winds are 10 mph or less. Everyone should stay on land when winds exceed 15 mph.

If you paddle along the coast, such as in Key Biscayne or Vero Beach, check the wave height, or swell, before launching. Larger waves make paddleboarding more difficult.

Also check boat traffic, water quality, and the current’s strength and direction.

Visit the NOAA weather website for weather forecasts. Check your local county’s water quality website for “no swim” advisories.

2. Dress for Immersion

Once you have checked the conditions, dress for the water.

Wear clothing that you can comfortably swim in. Paddleboarding is a water sport, so expect to get wet. You may also fall into the water.

For most people, a swimsuit or swim shorts work best.

3. Protect Yourself from Sunburn

You will likely spend several hours in direct sunlight. The water also reflects UV rays, increasing your exposure.

Protect your skin by wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Add lip balm with SPF, a cap, and a long-sleeve sun shirt for extra protection.

Repeated sun exposure can cause painful sunburn and increase your risk of skin cancer.

4. Gear Up

Whether you bring your own board or rent from PADL, prepare before you launch.

Every PADL rental includes a paddle board, paddle, life vest (U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type II PFD), leash, and marine safety whistle. Take all of this equipment with you on the water.

We also recommend bringing:

  • A fully charged smartphone in a floating waterproof case

  • A waterproof watch

  • Water shoes, aqua socks, or Crocs

  • Drinking water

  • Snacks for longer paddles

Every PADL board includes a deck strap to secure items like a water bottle.

Bring what you need, but avoid overloading your paddle board.

5. Spread the Word

Tell someone where you are paddling and when you expect to return.

Invite friends or family to join you whenever possible. Paddling together is more enjoyable and safer.

If you paddle alone, let someone know your plan. When you return safely, send them a quick text.

6. Wear Your Leash

Every PADL rental includes a leash.

Wear it securely around your ankle every time you paddle. Your leash keeps your board close if you fall into the water.

7. Know the Navigation Rules

A paddle board is a non-motorized vessel, much like a kayak or sailboat. When you paddle, you are responsible for following the navigation rules.

Review the navigation rules before heading out.

Avoid paddling in the middle of marked navigation channels whenever possible. Fast-moving boats often travel through these areas and may not see you in time.

Now You’re Ready to Paddle

One of the best parts of renting with PADL is the convenience. You do not need to store your board, transport it, or wash it afterward.
